triton

Pond-dwelling amphibian

A triton is a large sea snail with a spiral shell, prized by collectors and sometimes used as a trumpet by blowing through a hole in the apex.

In nuclear physics, a triton is the nucleus of a tritium atom—one proton and two neutrons.

The word also names a group of aquatic salamanders, the newts.

She found a triton shell on the beach. (Capitalized Triton is the Greek god or Neptune's moon.)
