treatises
Formal written arguments
Treatises are formal written works that examine a subject systematically and in depth.
A treatise is more comprehensive than an essay, typically covering a topic exhaustively: legal treatises, philosophical treatises.
The word suggests scholarly rigor and thorough treatment: Newton's treatise on optics, a treatise on constitutional law.
