Hobbes

Nasty, brutish, short

Hobbes refers to Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679), the English philosopher best known for *Leviathan*, which argued that human life without government would be "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." His political philosophy emphasized the need for a strong sovereign to prevent chaos.

In popular culture, Hobbes is also the stuffed tiger companion in Bill Watterson's comic strip *Calvin and Hobbes*, named after the philosopher.
