hornbooks

Colonial reading aids

Hornbooks were early primers for teaching children to read, consisting of a printed sheet—typically showing the alphabet, digits, and the Lord's Prayer—mounted on a wooden paddle and protected by a thin layer of transparent horn.

The term now refers to any introductory text or basic manual for a field of study: a hornbook of contract law.
