treadling

Working the pedals

Treadling is operating a treadle—a foot-powered lever that drives machinery through repeated pressing.

The word appears most often in weaving, where the weaver's feet work treadles to raise and lower different sets of warp threads: The treadling sequence determines the pattern.

Potters also use treadling to spin their wheels.
