downstroke

Letter's falling half

A downstroke is a stroke made in a downward direction—the movement of a pen, brush, or tool from top to bottom.

In handwriting, downstrokes are typically heavier than upstrokes.

The term applies to any reciprocating motion: the downstroke of a piston, the downstroke of a bird's wing, the downstroke of a drummer's stick.
