jambs
Vertical sides of frames
Jambs are the vertical side pieces of a door or window frame—the parts you might lean against or grab when standing in a doorway.
The term extends to similar vertical supports in fireplaces and other architectural openings.
When installing a door, carpenters must ensure the jambs are plumb and properly shimmed.
The old house had ornately carved door jambs throughout.
