iodine-131

Radioactive thyroid treatment

Iodine-131 is a radioactive isotope of iodine with a half-life of about eight days.

It is used medically to diagnose and treat thyroid conditions, including thyroid cancer, because the thyroid gland readily absorbs iodine.

Iodine-131 is also a significant component of nuclear fallout, making it a health concern after nuclear accidents or weapons detonation.

The patient received iodine-131 therapy for her overactive thyroid.
