functional MRI

Activity-mapping brain scan

Functional MRI, usually abbreviated fMRI, is a brain imaging technique that measures neural activity by detecting changes in blood flow.

When brain regions become active, they consume more oxygen, creating signals the scanner can map.

Researchers use fMRI to study which areas of the brain respond to specific tasks, stimuli, or thoughts: The fMRI showed increased activity in the amygdala when subjects viewed threatening images.
