deuterium
Neutron-bearing hydrogen isotope
Deuterium is a stable isotope of hydrogen whose nucleus contains one proton and one neutron, giving it roughly twice the mass of ordinary hydrogen.
Scientists often call it heavy hydrogen, and it appears in heavy water, which is used in certain nuclear reactors.
Deuterium occurs naturally in small amounts in all water and hydrogen compounds.
The fusion of deuterium and tritium releases enormous energy.
