carbon-11

Short-lived imaging isotope

Carbon-11 is a radioactive isotope of carbon with a half-life of about twenty minutes.

Its rapid decay makes it useful in positron emission tomography (PET scans), where carbon-11 compounds are injected to image metabolic processes in the body.

The short half-life means it must be produced on-site in a cyclotron.
