tit
Tiny insect-eating bird
A tit is a small songbird common across Europe and Asia—blue tit, great tit, coal tit.
The name has nothing to do with the vulgar sense that dominates American awareness.
Tit is also crude slang for a breast, and in British usage, an insult for a foolish person: You silly tit.
The phrase tit for tat (retaliation in kind) comes from an older expression meaning blow for blow, unrelated to either birds or anatomy.
