Lower East Side

Historic immigrant enclave

The Lower East Side is a neighborhood in southeastern Manhattan, historically the landing point for waves of immigrants—Irish, Jewish, Italian, Chinese—and long associated with tenement life, ethnic enclaves, and working-class culture.

By the late 20th century it became known for punk rock clubs, artists, and eventually gentrification: We're going to a bar on the Lower East Side.

Often abbreviated LES.
