hamadryad

Nymph inside oak

A hamadryad is a wood nymph in Greek mythology, bound to a particular tree and dying when it dies—unlike other nymphs who merely inhabit forests.

The word also names the king cobra, the world's largest venomous snake, native to South and Southeast Asia.

The hamadryad reared up, spreading its hood.
