sublease

Renter rents out

A sublease is a lease granted by a tenant to a third party, transferring some or all of their rights to the property while the original lease remains in effect.

The original tenant becomes a sublessor, responsible to both the landlord and subtenant.

To sublease is to grant such an arrangement: She subleased her apartment for the summer while studying abroad.

Many leases prohibit or restrict subleasing.
