subleasing

Renting out temporarily

Subleasing is renting out property you yourself are renting—becoming a landlord to a subtenant while remaining a tenant to your own landlord.

The practice is common when someone needs to leave before a lease ends: She's subleasing her apartment while she's abroad for the semester.

Many leases prohibit or restrict subleasing without the landlord's consent.
