renter

Pays for occupancy

A renter is someone who pays to use property they don't own, typically an apartment or house: The building has twelve renters.

In American usage, renter and tenant are nearly interchangeable, though tenant appears more often in legal contexts.

Renter can also mean one who rents things out, though this sense is rare.
