tenant farming
Leased land agriculture
Tenant farming is an agricultural arrangement where farmers work land owned by someone else, typically paying rent through cash, a share of the crop, or labor.
The tenant provides the work while the landowner provides the land and sometimes equipment or supplies.
Tenant farming dominated the post-Civil War South.
The system often kept farmers in cycles of poverty and debt.
