streetcars
Urban rail vehicles
Streetcars are passenger vehicles that run on rails embedded in city streets, powered by overhead electric lines.
They were the dominant form of urban transit in the early twentieth century before buses and automobiles displaced them.
Some cities have preserved or revived streetcar lines: The streetcar rattled down Canal Street.
Also called trolleys or trams.
