stop motion

Puppet filmmaking technique

Stop motion is an animation technique where objects are photographed one frame at a time, moved slightly between shots, then played back to create the illusion of movement.

The technique works with clay figures (*claymation*), puppets, paper cutouts, or any physical objects: The film used stop motion to bring the dinosaurs to life.

As a modifier, usually hyphenated: a stop-motion film.
