Laika

First orbital dog

Laika was a Soviet space dog, the first animal to orbit Earth, launched aboard Sputnik 2 in November 1957.

She died within hours from overheating and stress—the mission had no plan for her return.

Laika became a symbol of both space-age achievement and the ethical costs of early space exploration.

The name means "barker" in Russian.
