standardbred

Bred to specifications

A standardbred is a breed of horse developed in North America for harness racing, where horses pull a driver in a two-wheeled cart called a sulky.

Standardbreds are distinguished from thoroughbreds, which race under saddle.

The name comes from the "standard" time a horse had to meet to be registered in the breed.

The standardbred trotted the mile in under two minutes.
