pacers
Lead runners, sometimes
Pacers are people or animals that set or maintain a pace.
In racing, a pacer is a horse that moves both legs on one side together, or a runner or cyclist who sets the tempo for others.
A cardiac pacemaker is sometimes shortened to pacer—a device that regulates heartbeat rhythm.
The pacers dropped out after the first lap, leaving the contenders to race alone. (Capitalized Pacers is the NBA team.)
