pastern

Above the hoof

The pastern is the part of a horse's leg between the fetlock and the hoof—a short, sloping segment that acts as a shock absorber.

The term applies to other hoofed animals as well.

A horse with good pasterns moves smoothly; one with overly upright pasterns may develop lameness.
