bedlam

Utter wild disorder

Bedlam is a scene of wild uproar and confusion: The classroom descended into bedlam when the teacher stepped out.

The word comes from Bethlem, a London psychiatric hospital notorious for its chaotic conditions.

Now it simply means any noisy, disorderly situation: It was absolute bedlam at the airport during the storm.
