spermatozoa

Tadpole-shaped reproductive cells

Spermatozoa are male reproductive cells—the plural of spermatozoon.

Each consists of a head containing genetic material and a tail for propulsion.

They are produced in the testes and, upon fertilization of an egg, contribute half the chromosomes to offspring.

The informal shortening is sperm, which serves as both singular and plural.
