ova
Cells awaiting fertilization
Ova is the plural of ovum, the female reproductive cell in animals and plants.
In humans, ova are released from the ovaries during ovulation and, if fertilized by sperm, develop into embryos.
The singular ovum appears mainly in technical contexts; ova is more common in both scientific and general usage: The doctor explained that her ova were healthy.
