sounding off

Voicing one's views

Sounding off is speaking one's opinions loudly and forcefully, often without being asked and sometimes to the point of being obnoxious about it.

He's always sounding off about politics at family dinners.

The phrase comes from military usage, where soldiers sound off by shouting responses during roll call or cadence.

Someone who sounds off may be venting frustration, asserting themselves, or simply enjoying the sound of their own voice.
