sock hop

Fifties gym dance

A sock hop is an informal dance party, originally held in school gymnasiums where attendees removed their shoes to protect the floor.

The term evokes 1950s and early 1960s American teenage culture, when rock and roll was new: The gym was decorated for the sock hop.

Now used nostalgically for retro-themed events.
