Varsity refers to the principal athletic team representing a school or university, as distinguished from junior varsity or freshman squads: She made varsity as a sophomore.
The word derives from a British pronunciation of "university." In American usage, varsity extends beyond sports to any top-level school activity: varsity debate, varsity cheerleading.
As an adjective, it suggests excellence or first-string status: varsity players get the best equipment.
