tailfins

Fifties automotive flourishes

Tailfins are the vertical stabilizing surfaces at the rear of aircraft, rockets, or missiles.

In automotive design, tailfins were decorative rear extensions on cars, especially American models from the late 1950s, inspired by jet aircraft aesthetics: Those '59 Cadillacs had the most extravagant tailfins.

The style became synonymous with postwar excess and has since faded from mainstream car design.
