hand jive

Rhythmic hand movements

Hand jive is a dance performed mainly with the hands and arms rather than the feet, involving rhythmic clapping, slapping the thighs, and crossing hand motions.

It originated in 1950s rock and roll clubs where crowded floors left no room to move.

The term also refers to expressive hand gestures used while talking: He was doing some serious hand jive trying to explain the accident.
