skyhook

Nonexistent aerial anchor

A skyhook is an imaginary or mythical device for hanging something from the sky—used when there's no visible means of support.

The term appears in jokes and pranks, especially sending newcomers to fetch a nonexistent tool: Go ask the foreman for a skyhook.

In basketball, a skyhook is a high, arcing hook shot made famous by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, released from above the head where defenders can't block it.
