sideslip
Drift off course
Sideslip refers to lateral movement—sliding sideways rather than forward.
In aviation, a sideslip is a controlled maneuver where a pilot banks the aircraft while applying opposite rudder, causing it to move sideways through the air: The pilot used a sideslip to lose altitude quickly.
In skiing, sideslipping means descending a slope by sliding sideways on the edges of the skis.
Vehicles may sideslip on wet or icy roads, losing traction and drifting laterally.
