sickle cell trait
Inherited blood condition
Sickle cell trait is the condition of carrying one copy of the gene for sickle cell disease without having the disease itself.
People with the trait typically have no symptoms and live normal lives, but can pass the gene to children.
If both parents carry the trait, each child has a one-in-four chance of having sickle cell disease.
The trait is most common among people of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian descent.
