sickling
Red cells curving
Sickling is the process by which red blood cells deform into a crescent or sickle shape, characteristic of sickle cell disease.
Under low oxygen conditions, abnormal hemoglobin causes cells to stiffen and curve: The sickling of her blood cells caused a painful crisis.
Sickling can block small blood vessels, reducing oxygen flow to tissues.
