sickle cell anemia
Crescent blood disease
Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder in which red blood cells become rigid and curved like a sickle, blocking blood flow and causing pain, organ damage, and anemia.
The condition primarily affects people of African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern descent.
Carriers of one copy of the gene have sickle cell trait, which confers some resistance to malaria.
