sickle cell disease
Crescent blood condition
Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder in which red blood cells become rigid and crescent-shaped, obstructing blood flow and causing pain, organ damage, and anemia.
The condition is inherited when both parents carry the sickle cell gene; carrying only one copy (sickle cell trait) typically causes no symptoms but can be passed to children.
The disease disproportionately affects people of African, Mediterranean, and South Asian descent.
