sickle-cell anemia
Crescent-shaped blood disease
Sickle-cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder in which red blood cells become rigid and crescent-shaped, obstructing blood flow and causing pain, organ damage, and shortened lifespan.
The condition predominantly affects people of African, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern descent.
Those who inherit the gene from only one parent have sickle-cell trait, which offers some protection against malaria.
