deoxygenation
Stripping oxygen away
Deoxygenation is the removal or depletion of oxygen from something.
The term appears most often in environmental contexts—ocean deoxygenation threatens marine life as warming waters hold less dissolved oxygen.
In medicine, blood deoxygenation occurs when oxygen is consumed by tissues: Deoxygenated blood returns to the heart through the veins.
