priapism

Persistent unwanted erection

Priapism is a persistent, often painful erection of the penis unrelated to sexual arousal.

The condition is a medical emergency—blood trapped in erectile tissue can cause permanent damage if not treated within hours.

The term comes from Priapus, the Greek god of fertility, depicted with an enormous, permanent erection.

He went to the ER with priapism after taking too much medication.
