shivah
Seven-day grief
Shivah is the week-long mourning period in Judaism following the burial of a close relative.
Mourners traditionally stay home, sit on low chairs, and receive visitors who offer condolences: They sat shivah for his mother.
The practice emphasizes community support during grief.
Also spelled shiva.
