sitting shiva
Week of grieving
Sitting shiva is the week-long mourning period in Jewish tradition following the burial of a close relative.
Mourners stay home, receive visitors, and abstain from normal activities while the community brings food and comfort.
The practice comes from the Hebrew word for seven, referring to the seven days: We'll be sitting shiva at my mother's house through Sunday.
