death knells
Bells announcing demise
Death knells are sounds or events that signal the end of something.
Originally, a death knell was the tolling of a church bell to announce someone's death.
Now the phrase is almost always figurative: The factory closure sounded the death knells for the town's economy.
Usually plural, often preceded by "sounded" or "rang."
