subflooring

Under the finish

Subflooring is the layer of material installed directly on floor joists, beneath the finished flooring.

Usually plywood or oriented strand board, it provides a flat, stable base for hardwood, tile, carpet, or other surface materials: We discovered water damage to the subflooring when we pulled up the old carpet.
