self-fulfilling prophecy
Belief becomes reality
A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that causes itself to come true.
The belief in the outcome influences behavior in ways that make the outcome more likely: If you keep saying you'll fail, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
A teacher who expects certain students to excel may give them more attention, producing the predicted success.
The term applies to both positive and negative expectations.
