scenthounds

Scent-tracking dog breeds

Scenthounds are hunting dogs bred to track prey by smell rather than sight.

Breeds like bloodhounds, beagles, and basset hounds have long ears, loose skin, and powerful noses that allow them to follow trails hours or even days old.

They typically hunt in packs, baying to alert hunters when they've found quarry.

Compare sighthounds, which chase prey they can see.
