rumrunning

Prohibition-era trafficking

Rumrunning is the smuggling of alcoholic beverages, especially by boat.

The term emerged during Prohibition in the United States (1920–1933), when smugglers transported liquor from Canada, the Caribbean, and ships anchored beyond territorial waters.

His grandfather made a fortune rumrunning during Prohibition.

The compound rum-runner refers to both the smuggler and the vessel used.
