flappers

Roaring Twenties women

Flappers were young women of the 1920s who defied conventional expectations—wearing short skirts and bobbed hair, drinking and smoking in public, dancing to jazz.

The term captured both their style and their spirit of rebellion against Victorian morality.

A flapper is also anything that flaps: a hinged part, a broad fin, or a young bird learning to fly.
