rootstocks
Grafting base plants
Rootstocks are the underground parts of plants from which new growth emerges—rhizomes, tubers, or other root systems that persist through dormant seasons.
In horticulture, a rootstock is specifically the root portion onto which a different plant variety is grafted: The orchard uses dwarf rootstocks to keep trees manageable.
The grafted variety determines the fruit; the rootstock determines vigor, disease resistance, and size.
